Public concerned over fly-tipping incidents...

READERS have been contacting the Oldham Chronicle to complain about mountains of rubbish and fly-tipping at the borough’s worst grot spots.

And reporter Karen Doherty spotted this particularly disgusting example at the end of Kent Street, Off Ashton Road, in Hathershaw.

Flooding has created a filthy pond filled complete with a discarded trolley, buggy and sofa. Debris is strewn around and rubbish spills out of dumped bin bags.

A spokesman for Oldham Council said that an environmental health officer visited the site when it was made aware of the mess by the Chronicle.

He confirmed that it was private land and that a notice would be served on the owner to remove the waste.

Meanwhile, an Oldham councillor has called on all candidates in the forthcoming local elections to put creating clean, green and safe local environments back on the political agenda.

Dr Zahid Chauhan believes that central government has reduced the creation of quality public spaces to a side-line issue – even though voters are more concerned about litter, fly-tipping, dog fouling, air pollution and waste disposal than any other local issue.

Incidents
The councillor for Alexandra said: “In the last year we have seen over 900,000 incidents of fly-tipping alone in the UK – an increase of 5.6 per cent since 2013.
