CROWDS flocked to SportsDirect.com Park last night as as a team of Latics legends took on an All Stars XI featuring Paul Scholes in support of a teenage talent left paralysed by a freak accident.

As part of a touching tribute to popular 17-year-old Ellis Robinson, a team managed by former Oldham Athletic boss Joe Royle, former stars including Andy Ritchie, David Eyres and current manager John Sheridan took on Scholes, Ray Wilkins, Frank Sinclair and a whole host of former Premier League players.

Chadderton-based world champion boxer Anthony Crolla also appeared as a special guest for the All Stars side.

Former Rochdale youth team player Ellis suffered a serious spinal cord injury while playing football on February 24 at Hathershaw Sports Centre.

The brave teenager made it to the match from Southport where he is being treated at the Spinal Injuries Centre.

Event organisers, who go by the name Team Ellis, told the Chronicle: “Thank you so much to everyone who came tonight to support Ellis, he is over the moon. You’re all amazing, and team Ellis loves you all.”

Since the #TeamEllis campaign began on social media, a whole host of football stars have sent their support, including Leicester City and England striker Jamie Vardy.

The family hopes money raised at last night’s match can go towards sending Ellis to America where specialist treatment — which could get him back on his feet —
is available.
