STUDENTS from a Chadderton primary joined other schools in a thanksgiving mass celebrating their fundraising efforts for St Joseph's Penny Appeal.

Pupils of Corpus Christi Primary School joined their peers from across the Diocese of Salford at Salford Cathedral on June 9 for a mass to celebrate their successful fundraising. Bishop John Arnold and over 150 students attended the service.

The money raised for the St Joseph's Appeal - so far over £45,000 collectively - will go towards helping the Caritas work which supports children, young mothers and families overcome difficulties.

Mark Wiggin, Caritas Salford chief executive, said: "When someone helps you or when you help someone - no matter how small that help is - you are bringing hope into their lives. That's what St Joseph's Penny Appeal does. When you collect your pennies you are really giving hope to people in need. Thank you."

Pupils from Corpus Christi gave readings during the service at the cathedral hall which had such a strong show of support they ran out of mass programmes.

Bishop John Arnold said: "For over a century, children from the Diocese of Salford have been raising funds for St Joseph's Penny Appeal.

"It brings me great joy to celebrate mass and meet the children who have worked so hard.

"I would like to thank them, their teachers and their schools for their time and dedication. Every penny collected is used to make a happy home. I hope the children are encouraged by what they have achieved this year, and I look forward to seeing their future fundraising efforts." The final amount raised will be announced later in the year.
