THE family of a man who died in a smash on the M62 have paid tribute to him.

Dad-of-one Darren Walmsley (51), from Milnrow, was killed in a seven-vehicle accident on July 4 near junction 21 for Shaw/Milnrow.

He was driving his Mercedes on the Eastbound carriageway - heading towards Yorkshire - when he was involved in a collision with a heavy goods vehicle at 9.30am.

Collided

The car then went through the central reservation onto the Westbound carriageway and collided with another car and two HGVs.

Mr Walmsley died at the scene of the crash.

A man and a woman who were travelling in one of the other vehicles were taken to hospital for treatment for serious injuries, which are not believed to be life threatening.

Paying tribute to him, the family said: "Darren was a quiet, shy and unassuming man who was happiest in the company of his family and friends.

"He was a loving and devoted husband to his wife of twenty five years, Noreen and a caring and proud father to his beloved daughter Melanie.

"His father John raised Darren and younger brother David when their mother passed away at an early age, making them a tight, supportive family unit.

"He was always willing to help those close to him and found time to do favours for anyone who needed them. Those who spent time with him found Darren to be good company, quick to smile and laugh. He will be sorely missed."
