A NATIONAL award for Tenant of the Year has been presented to an Oldham stalwart.

Hilary Lomas, from Hollinwood, is celebrating after she received the accolade at the national final of England's Tenant Participation Advisory Service (TPAS) awards.

The 75-year-old, who has lived on the Limeside Estate for more than 70 years, was praised for "working tirelessly within the community".

Her organisation of events, applications for project funding and ensuring access to opportunities for children in the surrounding area were among reasons given for her achievement.

The tenant of Salford-based housing provider Contour Homes said: "I was really nervous and didn't expect to actually win. It was a shock when they read out my name but I'm absolutely thrilled that people are recognising what I do.

"I had a brilliant night with a three-course meal, dancing, music and karaoke.

"I woke up the next day, very tired but happy."

Dedicated

The annual TPAS awards showcase the success stories of tenants, landlords and contractors as a means of celebrating and rewarding those who help to shape best practice in tenant participation in England.

Hilary was selected ahead of finalists from the south and central regions after her success in the regional awards, scooping the top prize at the awards ceremony, which was held in Warwickshire.

The dedicated resident was previously presented with the Making a Difference in the Community award by Contour for her voluntary work, running of the community hall and commitment to her local area.

Community investment officer Stephanie Hill, who nominated Hilary for the award, said: "Hilary helps bring people together.

"I see her as being the glue of the community.

"She has a real understanding of the neighbourhood and is a great voice for local people.

"We know that at Contour we couldn't achieve half of the work we do on this estate without her support as a volunteer and we are very grateful for this."
