A SHAW nursing home has been told to make improvements following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission.

Shaw Side Residential and Nursing Home, on Oldham Road, was rated as "requires improvement" after inspectors found four breaches of the Health and Social Care Act.

The home, run by Bupa Care Homes, was rated as "requires improvement" in safety, effectiveness, care and leadership. It received a grade of "good" for responsiveness.

Inspectors, who visited earlier this year, found issues with the levels of cleanliness and maintenance of some equipment in the communal areas.

They also said that some furnishings were in need of repair or redecoration.

Some pressure relieving mattress were also identified as not having being maintained to an adequate standard to ensure that they functioned safely and protected people from the risk of infection.

The report added: "There were ongoing problems with the functioning of the nurse call bell system, which meant that when it was faulty, people who used the service were not always able to summon assistance when needed.

"A new call bell system was scheduled to be installed later in the year."

The home, which provides residential and nursing care for up to 150 people, also faced issues with medicines not being given at the correct times and the delivery of some medication from the pharmacy.

However, members of staff were praised for their work and attitudes to patient care, with a variety of activities organised for service users.

The report said: "Staff understood the importance of encouraging people to make choices where they were able and sought consent before undertaking any care.

"We saw that overall staff were kind and patient with people who used the service.

"Care plans we looked at were 'person-centred' and had been reviewed regularly."
