WAR veterans gathered to mark the 76th anniversary of the world's largest air battle.

They took part in a service at Oldham war memorial on Sunday as part of the annual Battle of Britain parade.

Oldham Royal Air Force Association organised the parade, which was led by the Oldham Scottish Pipe Band.

Around 70 residents took part, including members of local Air Training Corps squadrons, Scottish Pipe Band and veterans.

Secretary Derek Simpson of Oldham RAFA branch said: "Everything went well and there was a good turn out.

"The weather was great and we went back to the Tommyfield for refreshments afterwards.

"We always feel it is good to remember the Battle of Britain and all the other wars which took place."

The parade formed near the Tommyfield pub, in Henshaw Street ahead of the march.

The service of remembrance at the cenotaph was led by Rev Derek Palmer, from Oldham Parish Church.

Mayor of Oldham, Derek Heffernan, was the guest of honour at the parade and shared a few words during the service.

Mr Simpson previously said: "The Battle of Britain was a turning point in the Second World War and but for the efforts of a few the outcome of the conflict could have been very different.

"We also remember those who gave their lives in other conflicts around the world, so that we can have the freedom we enjoy today.

"While the Oldham branch still exists, it is our intention to continue this parade."
