A DEPARTMENT store is celebrating its first birthday in Oldham town centre.

The 50 staff employed at TJ Hughes, in Spindles Town Square Shopping Centre, are marking the occasion after the store reopened in the town last September.

The store has undergone a large refurbishment, increasing its retail space to 35,000ft since reviving in the same location it had previously occupied.

Managing director Anil Juneja said: "We are delighted to be celebrating the first birthday of our Oldham store.

"It has contributed significantly to the local economy over the past year.

"Oldham shoppers have a real affection for the TJ Hughes brand and the relaunch of the Oldham site has been very well received.

Response

"We have had a fantastic response from the local community, local authorities and town centre management.

"The discount retail sector is currently very buoyant and TJ Hughes occupies a unique position as the UK's only discount department store offering top brands at up to 70 per cent off RRP.

"With lots of in-store offers and promotions to celebrate our first birthday, we look forward to welcoming Oldham shoppers in store."

The reopening of the Oldham store forms part of the discount retailer's plan to expand on its 18 existing stores.
