THE future looks bright for University Centre Oldham and the 334 students who have graduated.

Not only was the number of graduates almost double last year’s, but plans are in place for UCO to double in size over the next five years.

Prof Bob Cryan, the vice-chancellor, said: “It is a very proud day for me — really fantastic — we are trying to create a university for Oldham.”

Graduates donned gowns and mortar boards for the ceremony at Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Among those receiving diplomas was the outgoing chief executive of Oldham Council, Andrew Kilburn.

Mr Kilburn, who helped to develop UCO, was awarded an honorary doctorate of civil law.

University Centre Oldham, part of the University of Huddersfield, and yesterday students were graduating in business and management, art and design, computing, law, technical theatre and performance, and education and professional development.

It was smiles all round for mother-of-two Rungamirai Magada (39), from Werneth, who graduated with a BSc (Hons) in health and community studies.

She said: “It has been hard work over the past three years, trying to combine a family and education.

“Now I’m planning to go into social care and put something back into the community. But I might go for a masters degree.”

Rungamirai’s daughter, Charlene (15), is keen to follow her mother’s example. She said: “I’m very proud of her and very happy she is graduating. Now, we get our mum back. I’m going to study to become a doctor.”

Musician Colin Jones (45), from Todmorden, juggled running his own company, gigging and playing the drums with studying for a foundation degree in technical theatre.

He said: “Having a degree means I can go further with my teaching, as well as take an audio and visual course at Salford University. It has been difficult combining everything, and there have been lots of sleepless nights, but it is definitely worth it.”

Leanne Dennis (22), from Milton Keynes, moved to Oldham to be able to study for a foundation degree in performing arts.

She said: “Getting a foundation degree is a great opportunity, and I’ll be studying for my final third year at Huddersfield.”

Friends Shazia Begum (23), from Werneth, and Marriam Iqbal (23), from Glodwick, both scooped upper second-class honours in health and community studies.

Marriam said: “It is a big achievement, but we’ve had great support from the tutors and our families who are really proud of us.”
