Nicola in line for teacher title

Date published: 08/10/2008

AN Oldham schoolteacher could soon be in a class of her own — for excellence.

Nicola Garth (27), from Watersheddings Primary School, is heading for the finals of the 2008 Teaching Awards.

She is in line for the BT national teacher of the year in a primary school award after winning the North-West title.

Ten other teachers from the North-West have been shortlisted for awards awards.

Nicola will join 142 winners from around Britain competing at the London Palladium on October 19.

Eleven winners will receive the ultimate accolade — a gold Plato, the symbol of a UK teaching award.

Speaking of her North-West award, Nicola said: “You don’t expect to win awards for doing a job you love.”

Lord Puttman, founding chairman of the awards, said: “This is our 10th anniversary ceremony. It is a unique opportunity to feel proud of our schools and to say thank you to a profession that is at the heart of society.

“Teachers deserve recognition for the difference they make to young lives.”
