ANTI-WAR protesters are preparing for a major demonstration in Oldham tomorrow calling for an end to the Israeli attacks on Gaza.

Around 1,500 campaigners are expected to flock to the rally in Grange School car park, according to Oldham police.

The demo is one of many being held across Greater Manchester in support of Gaza.

Protesters will call for a ceasefire after the Israeli air strikes and ground offensive on the Gaza Strip killed more than a thousand people.

The demonstration, which begins at 1.30pm, has been organised by Oldham Together and Oldham Interfaith Forum.

Oldham Council’s Bruce Penhale, assistant director for communities, said: “It is everyone’s democratic right to protest peacefully. Event organisers have worked closely with the police and the council to ensure those wanting to take part do so in a safe and orderly manner.”

The Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Shoab Akhtar, is also expected to attend the event outside the Rochdale Road school.

He said: “The war needs to end now. Israel’s reaction is well out of proportion. The amount of force being used is despicable.

“Innocent lives have been lost in huge numbers. I will be there to show my support to the Palestinians.”

Saddleworth parish councillor Ken Hulme, who will attend with the Saddleworth Peace Movement Banner, said he was delighted that such a rally was being held in Oldham.

He added: “This is not about Muslims, Christians and Jews. It’s a question of Palestinian people and them having rights and living free from fear — that goes for Israeli citizens too.

“I encourage all to join the protest, where guest speakers will include MP Michael Meacher and Euro-MP Chris Davies.”

Oldham Division’s Partnership Inspector John Taylor said: “Greater Manchester Police supports people’s right to protest peacefully.

“Based on the information provided by the organisers, arrangements have been made for a safe and peaceful protest.”
