Special needs poser for borough’s schools

PARENTS can have their say on plans to shake up provision for pupils with severe and complex communication difficulties such as autism.

Oldham Council wants to replace the current set-up at Counthill School — due to be merged in an academy — with two resource bases at Failsworth and North Chadderton schools.

All secondary schools were invited to become a resource base. But Failsworth and North Chadderton best met the criteria. They would open in 2011 under the borough’s £230 million Building Schools for the Future (BFS) plans.

The council claims that the majority of children with severe and complex communication difficulties make the best progress in a mainstream school where they receive a relevant education, including the national curriculum, sometimes with the help of outside specialists.

It believes the support bases would teach within mainstream classes according to need, specialist facilities and discrete, specialist teaching space.

They would also provide support and expertise for other schools.

Councillor Kay Knox, Cabinet member for children, young people and families, said: “The council must take steps to make sure that the right support is in place for these pupils — they need and deserve the best facilities we can provide.

“Research shows that specialist expertise and appropriate environments really do make a difference to the progress of pupils with additional needs.

“These proposals aim to make sure that we have a flexible provision in place that can meet changing needs, support other schools and deliver better opportunities for pupils and their families.”

A consultation booklet containing a survey about the proposals is being sent out to parents at the two schools and those whose children might use the bases. Copies are also available by calling 0161-770 3094.

Parents, pupils, governors and school staff can have their say online at www.oldham.gov.uk/bsf. The closing date for responses is March 13.
