A youth worker has won a prestigious award to mark his contribution to the community.

Ovid Eastmond, who recently graduated from Manchester University with a diploma in youth and community studies, won the University’s School of Education Best Contribution to the Community Award.

Glodwick-born Ovid is a well known face around Oldham and has been a youth worker for many years, including eight as a volunteer.

He has worked in youth centres and in recent years has specialised in detached youth work — talking to young people wherever they gather in the community.

Ovid has contributed to the council’s Integrated Youth Support Services by sharing expertise and knowledge with others.

He was nominated by Kate Sapin, the university’s communities and youth work course leader, who was impressed by his professional development, contribution to the learning at the university and his commitment and passion to Oldham’s young people.

Councillor Mark Alcock, cabinet member for citizens and neighbourhoods, said: “Ovid and his team have pioneered detached youth work, engaging with young people in parks, on the streets and other venues in all weathers to help out the community.

“Ovid is a well-respected youth worker in Oldham.

“His team is involved in engaging young people in events across the borough, including the Christmas lights switch-on, Operation Stay Safe and the Oldham Mela. He engages many young people in positive activities, including those at risk of being involved in anti-social behaviour.

“I would like to congratulate Ovid on his graduation from Manchester University and on being the first person to gain this new award from the Manchester University School of Education.”
