Surprise at rap for tram staff

Date published: 03 February 2012

METROLINK operators say they are surprised by criticism claiming “appalling” behaviour by contractors.

The cross-party accusation was levelled during the full council meeting on Wednesday night.

Contractors M-Pact Thales (MPT) consortium was criticised for having little regard for the way staff speak to residents and the council.

It was also alleged that staff failed to give notice when working later hours and threatened to work between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

But Bryan Diggins, project manager, said his company prided itself on fostering strong relationships with communities where it operates.

He added: “We take this obligation very seriously and where we are made aware of any lapses in our behaviour, I will always take the necessary actions.”

Philip Purdy, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) Metrolink director, said he was very disappointed to hear the comments that had been made by members.

“It’s vital that we all work together to deliver Metrolink in the right spirit, which is why we have established close working relationships with council officials and stakeholders along the line — to ensure issues are dealt with in a progressive way,” he said.

“So we are surprised to hear these comments and will be discussing the issues raised with MPact-Thales and council officials, to ensure appropriate action is taken.”

People might like to know that at the first mention of snow the netwrok collapsed again at the weekend. God help us when this mess finally manages to turn a wheel.

The "workers" in Shaw around the old station are nothing but courteous in their dealings with everyone around. On many occasions I have spoken to them and I find them hard-working, with nothing being too much trouble. If only that could be said of Oldham Council - but we live in hope I suppose!
