Wright grinds out win

FAILSWORTH welterweight prospect Danny Wright secured the second victory of his professional boxing career at the Victoria Warehouse in Trafford Park on Saturday, but he was forced to fight through the pain barrier to gain a points decision.

Wright (20) took on Middlesbrough tough guy Ross Jameson as he was bidding to build on his spectacular debut success in the paid ranks, when he stopped Krisztian Kovacs in the first round four weeks earlier.

The referee handed the local former amateur star a well-deserved 40 points to 37 victory after four all-action rounds, but Wright had gone into the fight with a badly injured right hand.

It appears he may have initially picked up the injury a number of weeks ago when sparring with former British and Commonwealth title challenger Tommy Coyle.

After the fight, frustrated former senior ABA champ Wright told the Chronicle: "That wasn't the performance I was after in any way, shape or form.

"I got the work-rate out, but I was disjointed somehow. The power I've been working on just didn't seem to be there.

"Of course the injury to my hand didn't help.

"I started to feel it last week and then on Friday night it just swelled up.

"It's sore, but I'll go and see the physio now and maybe I'll need to take a rest.

"It's another 'W' on my record, but I wanted to show so much more and I couldn't."

Wright had an almost 150-strong travelling army of fans cheering him on at ringside at the VIP Promotions show.

However, his scheduled appearance at VIP's popular annual 'Jolly Boys' show in Manchester next month must now be in doubt.
