Stephen’s back in town

TOUR DE FRANCE: IT will almost feel like coming home for Stephen Farrand when the Tour de France gets under way just across the Pennines this weekend in Leeds.

That’s because Farrand – a widely-respected Italian-based cycling journalist – grew up in Glodwick and Grotton and is a former Blue Coat School pupil.

Farrand, European correspondent for trade website Cycling News, said: “After being based in Livorno, Italy, since 1993, it does feel really special to be back in England to cover the Tour de France.

“And the event gets underway so close to where I grew up. It’s been lovely because it’s given me an ideal opportunity to visit my parents. I’ve been home for a few days already because this week is busy with pre-tour press conferences.”

Farrand’s passion for cycling began at an early age: “Though I was always keen on cycling, I didn’t join Oldham Century until I was 16, in the 1980s. I really enjoyed those days; the rides just fuelled my passion. Oldham Century was, and still is, a terrific club.”

The first three flat stages of the Tour de France begin on Saturday, as competitors ride from Leeds to Harrogate. Sunday sees the action turn to a York to Sheffield leg, then the athletes will ride between Cambridge and London on Monday. On Tuesday the race moves back to France.
