ADAM Lockwood is relishing the prospect of leading a talented young Athletic team towards exciting times this season.

The former Yeovil Town, Doncaster Rovers and Bury star was appointed club captain last week by manager Lee Johnson, and the 32-year-old defensive kingpin is clearly feeling an immense sense of pride.

He is looking forward to guiding and assisting all the players in the Athletic squad, in much the same way he looked up to and learned from some of his captains earlier in his career.

Lockwood, who was Doncaster’s team captain when they won promotion to the Championship in 2008, said: “First of all it was a privilege to be asked to be club captain.

“I didn’t really expect it if I’m honest, but I’ve been handed the role and I’m going to give it my all.

“It’s nice to think that the manager feels I’ve got the character to take on such a role, and now I’m here to help and perhaps guide the younger lads if there is anything that might on their minds.

“I always looked up to my captain during the my younger days, when I was finding my feet in the game.

“I know how difficult it can be for young players sometimes. They might be a bit unsure about something, so it can be tough to ask certain questions if things aren’t quite going the way you want.

“I’m in the club captain’s role at Oldham now, and I want to be seen as approachable and happy to talk.

“I’ve seen my appoint-ment as a kind of reward really, and for the lads who are here, I’m happy to help now.

“We have got a great bunch here and the early signs are promising.

“There’s a good feeling around the club and we need to carry that from the end of last season, into the new one.”

Boss Johnson is still to decide on who will be Athletic’s team captain in 2014-15.

Lockwood was initially used sparingly following his move to Sports Direct.com Park from Guiseley at the turn of the year.

However, he eventually racked up 20 appearances in the 2013-14 season — scoring two goals — and was one of the main reasons why Johnson’s side went on to close the campaign with a memorable 10-match unbeaten run.

The big man was then recognised for his impressive efforts alongside fellow centre-back James Wilson as he received a ‘Spirit of Oldham’ award for his outstanding contribution the the Athletic cause.

However, he will be unavailable for the opening game of the 2014-15 campaign through suspension after being shown two yellow cards against Notts County on the final day of last season.

ATHLETIC have been linked with potential swoops for three new players today.

Welsh international midfielder Brian Stock is rumoured to be a target following his summer release by Burnley, as is Wolves striker Leon Clarke, though Leyton Orient are also known to be chasing the ex-Coventry hit-man.

Wolves’ Welsh under-21 international striker Jake Cassidy has also been touted as a potential season-long capture.
