Second medal for Lloyd

IT proved to be an exciting weekend for Oldham’s representatives at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Diggle-based swim star Jessica Lloyd bagged herself a second medal at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre — this time a bronze — in the 4x200m freestyle relay event, though again, as in the earlier 4x100m event in which she won a silver, she missed out on a place in the final.

Lloyd swam leg one for Team England in the second heat on Saturday as the foursome finished third behind Australia and New Zealand.

However, in the final later in the day, England’s team of Siobhan O’Connor, Amelia Maughan, Ellie Faulkner and Becki Turner finished in the bronze medal position as the Aussies took gold and Canada the silver medals.

London 2012 Olympian Lloyd still qualified for her recognition, and later Lloyd’s chance of a third Glasgow medal were ended when she went out of the individual 50m freestyle event on Friday after finishing sixth in the semi-final.

Royton’s fellow City of Manchester Aquatics starlet Jessica Fullalove — who turned 18 yesterday — reached the semi-finals of the 100m backstroke event on Friday, but after qualifying from her heat, then finished sixth in a time of one minute, 1.2 seconds, to miss out on a final place.

Yesterday, Fullalove’s time of 2:15.95 was only enough to earn a fifth-placed finish in the 200m backstroke semi-final, so she missed out on a final place despite having made it onto the reserve list.

Fullalove was due to get her final event under way this morning in the heats of the 50m backstroke.

Oldham hockey star Nicola White is still bang on course for a medal as she featured in Team England’s second group stage win yesterday — 5-0 against Malaysia at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

White didn’t score this time, as she did in the opening 2-0 victory against Wales, but she is delighted with the momentum being shown by her team.

Team England were set to face major rivals Australia this afternoon in their third Group ‘B’ fixture.
