Latics must find way to halt hit-man Doyle

NO OTHER club in Sky Bet League One can match Chesterfield’s form this season.

The Spireites’ positive start to the campaign following promotion rests heavily on the shoulders of their top scorer, Irish striker Eoin Doyle.

The man from Dublin, formerly of Shelbourne and Hibs, has hit 15 goals in only a dozen league appearances — a club record at this stage of a season.

While Doyle is banging them in at the far end of the field, Chesterfield fans are sitting through some entertaining contests as a result of the team’s leaky defence.

The Spireites have shipped three goals a time in three of their last five games. The latest was last weekend at Bristol City, when Paul Cook’s bright, entertaining side gave division pacesetters Bristol City a fright on the way to a 3-2 loss.

After equalising twice through Doyle, Wes Burns inflicted misery on a club that has dealt misery to Athletic in recent times.

Chesterfield have fared better than their promoted rivals since making the step up and currently sit in sixth place, ahead of Athletic on goal difference.

Two weeks ago, Chesterfield’s local rivals Sheffield United were squeezed out 3-2 in the sort of thrilling contest the Spireites specialise in - but that win was the club’s only victory in five games.
