LOUIS van Gaal admits to being uncomfortable every time Manchester United play 4–4–2.

Van Gaal faced open criticism from United fans for the first time last week when a section of the travelling support at QPR demanded he ditch his 3–5–2 formation and switch to a more expansive 4–4–2.

The manager heeded their words and the move paid off as United beat Rangers 2–0, but Van Gaal did not enjoy the victory as much as he would have liked.

His enthusiasm for three at the back is not shared by several pundits. Ex–United stars Gary Neville and Michael Owen joined the fans in criticising the system. Former captain Neville believes United are too slow and predictable when they play three centre–backs, while ex–England striker Owen claimed Van Gaal's men weren’t functioning properly as a team.

Van Gaal concedes it might take some time. for his players to fully adapt: "They are still not comfortable with 3–5–2," he said. “"But up to now I am pleased and we are going the right way."

Regardless of how United line up, they are overwhelming favourites to beat Sky Bet League Two Cambridge at the Abbey Stadium tonight and make it through to the fifth round of the FA Cup.
