PAUL Scholes was the name on everyone’s lips as speculation began over who will step into the managerial breach at Athletic.

The Manchester United legend is well-known to chairman Simon Corney. As a regular watcher of the club, Scholes attended training sessions last season before taking up his new jobs as TV pundit and newspaper columnist.

Athletic has approached Scholes about the vacancy, but is not optimistic he will take up the offer.

The co-owner of non-league club Salford City told the Chronicle last June that he had little intention of taking charge at any club any time soon.

“I’ve no plans to go down the coaching or management road,” Scholes said. “If something came up in the future I would obviously have to think about it, but not at the moment.”

The club has alreday had interest from potential applicants.

One understood to have lodged his interest is Scott Sellars.

The former Premier League player with Newcastle and Blackburn had five years heading the Manchester City academy before losing his job last April.

Dean Holden will take charge as manager for the immediate future, assisted by club captain Adam Lockwood.

“I’m delighted to accept the board’s invitation to take charge,” Holden said.

“I’m fully focused on getting a positive result from Saturday’s game with Preston and will continue to prepare the squad for that game.”
