Mat Sadler (r) in action
DEFENDER Mat Sadler is hoping big numbers in the stands can inspire a big result for Athletic tonight.
The loan left-back (30), knows exactly how much local bragging rights mean to supporters and is as determined and focused as any of his Athletic team-mates ahead of the game.
Sadler, who hopes to make a fourth Athletic appearance following his temporary move from Rotherham, said: “The Rochdale game means a lot to me, that’s for certain. I’m very excited about the prospect of playing in front of a big, passionate crowd. Hopefully the fans will turn out in their numbers.
“As players, we have to show pride in the shirt again. There’s no better feeling than to win a derby game, while there’s also no worse feeling if it goes the other way.
We’ll be counting on vociferous support from our fans. Since I’ve been here they have been great.”
Sadler was delighted with Saturday’s clean sheet at Gresty Road, achieved in no small part thanks to the commanding debut performance of fellow defender Anthony Gerrard.
Sadler clearly feels Gerrard can help inspire a positive run-in after his loan move from Huddersfield.
“Anthony showed why he’s played a higher level, and also, as I’m sure he’d say, once he’s fit and stronger he’ll be even better,” added Sadler.
