THE gritty victory at Crewe sends Athletic into tonight’s hotly-anticipated derby against Rochdale with a genuine boost.

Dean Holden’s men ground out a hard-earned win on Saturday, only their second in eight games, and the Athletic caretaker boss is hoping his team and home fans will benefit from a renewed buzz as they prepare to take on a Dale side bang in form.

Holden is relishing the prospect of testing his managerial credentials in a game between two sides he used to play for.

The Athletic boss said: “It’s a great game for us, and there’s a real sense of optimism around the place again. Hopefully, a few more supporters will turn out on the back of a good win at Crewe, and that will create a good atmosphere. We know what another win can do for our season.

“If we can get off to a good start the fans will hopefully carry us through the remainder of the game and on to a big victory.

“I think it is important that we’ve got such a big game to follow the Crewe win. Tonight is another challenge and we’ll be ready to hopefully start a little run.”

Rochdale will offer a tough test and will seek revenge for the 3-0 defeat they suffered at Spotland in November.

Saturday’s matchwinner at Crewe – Conor Wilkinson – misses out tonight as he is on international duty with the Republic of Ireland under-21s. Rhys Turner could get another chance as Dominic Poleon only returned to training yesterday following his recent shoulder injury.

Anthony Gerrard – so dominant on debut at Crewe following his loan switch from Huddersfield – will continue at the heart of the defence alongside club skipper Adam Lockwood. Youngster Joel Coleman is set to make his second senior appearance in goal.
