RL stars backing world record bid

SOME of rugby league’s finest have come out in support of Saddleworth Rangers’ unofficial world record attempt at the longest game of touch rugby.

The marathon will be played over the Bank Holiday weekend, starting Saturday, August 29, and every age-group side at the Greenfield club will take part. There will also be guest appearances from professional stars with a link to the club.

On half of the field at Shaw Hall Bank Road, 28 volunteers will try to keep a game going for 30 hours. Waterloo RU club set the existing record in 2012. The club’s juniors and past players will play on the other half of the pitch, also for 30 hours in all The money raised will go towards a new clubhouse.

In bringing the world record bid to the public eye, Rangers turned to several of the sport’s biggest names from Oldham.

Leeds Rhinos star Kevin Sinfield and former Rangers junior players Mark Flanagan and Joe Greenwood, both at St Helens, plus Joe’s brother James (at Hull KR on loan from Wigan), have appeared on a Youtube video in support, which has aleady been seen more than 2,200 times.

The attempt begins at 10am and will hopefully break the record just after 4pm the following day.
