Moyes decision no mistake

SIR Alex Ferguson has insisted Manchester United didn’t make a mistake appointing David Moyes as his successor.

Moyes left Everton to take charge at Old Trafford following Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, but lasted only 10 months.

Ferguson, who recommended him, recently suggested the former Everton boss had not been first choice but defended the appointment process. Now he has gone further by saying Moyes was definitely the right choice at the time.

“I don’t think we made a mistake at all,” he said. “I think we chose a good football man. He did a great job at Everton, had 11 years there. We picked the right man. Unfortunately it didn’t work for David.”

The Scot was speaking in a new TV documentary, “Sir Alex Ferguson: Secrets of Success”, to be shown on Sunday. The documentary examines the methods behind his phenomenally successful career.

Meanwhile, Reds midfielder Juan Mata accepts his team must learn the harsh lessons of their horrible start in Sunday’s 3–0 defeat at Arsenal, but also not forget what took them to the top of the Barclays Premier League table.

Louis van Gaal was left stunned by the way his team lost at the Emirates Stadium, where the Gunners had put the contest beyond his side with three goals in the opening 20 minutes.

Mata, who has now gone on international duty with Spain, feels the squad has what it takes to recover.

“Before the game our goal was to keep the top spot of the Premiership, but it wasn’t our day. We must learn from this defeat,” he said.
