UKIP grab fourth

Date published: 14 January 2011

UKIP candidate Paul Nuttall was celebrating after snatching fourth place from the BNP

The party’s vote increased since the May General Election while the BNP lost nearly1,000 to slip to fifth and lose their deposit.

Mr Nuttall said: “I am very happy. We had three targets that at the start of the election: to save our deposit, to finish in fourth place and to park our tank on the BNP lawn.

“If I was offered that at the beginning of the campaign I would have taken it with both open arms”

BNP candidate Derek Adams was philosophical about his defeat: “We fought a hard campaign, but we didn’t spend an awful lot of money on it. Considering the budget for UKIP, I think £ for £ our is best value. And I will be back again.”

Monster Raving Loony Party candidate The Flying Brick was left disappointed after predicting “a loony landslide”.

UKIP, BNP, Monster Raving Loony? Aren't they the same?

I am sure that there are a lot of people glad to hear that the BNP have lost votes to UKIP but both parties campaigned on the same issues. If replicated across the borough these figures show that a large number of people in Oldham are bothered by these issues. It does seem however that in an effort not to be branded racist, voters fell for the "BNP light" trick that splits the vote. ukips campaign statement was "opposed to unlimited immigration" well who isnt?
