Crossing death gran ‘so young at heart’
Date published: 18 January 2012
TRIBUTES have been paid to a grandmother who died after she and her husband were struck by a car on a zebra crossing in Shaw on Monday.
Lynn Steele (60) was walking hand in hand with husband Raymond (65) across Crompton Way, at its junction with Milnrow Road, when they were in collision with a blue Toyota Yaris at 3.05pm.
The couple were taken to hospital with head injuries but Mrs Steele died a short time later.
Her husband (65) was transferred to Salford Royal and remains in a serious condition.
The elderly woman driver was put into a neck brace and placed on a stretcher, but was not hurt.
The couple’s daughter Sarah paid tribute to her mother who stayed active by swimming, cycling and walking and was a keen FC United fan.
She said: “She was young at heart and will be sadly missed by all of her family.”
It is believed the couple, grandparents to Jessica and Georgia, had moved to Shaw six months ago from Rochdale.
Iltaf Hussain, owner of Taff’s newsagent in Milnrow Road, was the first on the scene.
He said: “I was walking to my shop when I heard a bang.
“I turned around, ran over to the crossing and then ran back to the shop to call the police and ambulance.
“This crossing is a real accident spot.
“Also the sun was very low in the sky so it may have been difficult to see the couple crossing.”
Mr Hussain said there had been many accidents on the same stretch of road and said better traffic measures were needed.
He said: “They need to put a green man crossing here.”
No arrests have been made but investigations are ongoing.
Witnesses should call 0161-856 8473.

Condolences to all concerned in these unfortunate circumstances. Max D has it right. Since the 1970s when the by-pass was built, this has been a badly set out and poorly maintained part of Shaw's highways. Too many big lorries and speeding cars going Northwards have led to too many accidents. I am surprised that at 3pm there was no lollipop patrol there. Just ask her how bad it is, she takes her life in her own hands doing her job!
I totally agree with Max Damage, its an absolute nightmare I was fearful that an accident would happen any time at that crossing, and look it has and a life has been taken away, so so sad. I drive over the crossing daily and just hope that the council really do consider doing something about it in the very near future. My heart goes out to the family of Lynn & Raymond..
As a mum with 2 children in shaw schools I pull out of salts street onto milnrow road several times a day. Every day I witness drivers with no regard for this zebra crossing, Ive often thought if you stood taking registration numbers in a day you would get hundreds. The council needs to address this junction as to pull onto milnrow road you are pulling into 4 lanes of traffic from milnrow road in 2 directions and the opposite junction of traffic leaving linney lane to go in 2 directions.
Virtually every day at that crossing there is a near miss as the workers going to Littlewoods are getting to work "just in time" and have little consideration or time for pedestrians.
Not only does the Crossing need attention but the whole layout of the junctions around it as buses swinging out from Shaw are on the crossing before having chance to straighten up and see any pedestrians.
Also in the low winter sunlight I have experienced 1st hand the problems with vision
very sorry to hear terrible accident, condolences to all the couples family.my wife and i have crossed at same spot 6 times every week for 18 months .we never cross even if one sides stopped.its unbelievable the cars that should stop 3 4 at a time some times just ignore people crossing and carry on driveing.this may not be the case in this accident police enquiries going on BUT pedestrian lights would help mayby speed 20 mph school times ,i agree sun can be bad as well but that happens everywere

So after another sad and fatal accident at this crossing will the numpties at the council FINALY listen to people and put a pelican crossing in here? It is a well know shocker of a crossing and so easy to fix. Just divert money from some stupid waste of time project to this.
