Warbies staff set to spread

A PACKAGE of support is being provided to bakery workers as Warburtons prepares to close in Shaw.

The 73-year-old factory will shut its doors next week with the loss of 73 jobs.

The family-run business announced 101 staff have either been relocated to other sites within the company or taken early retirement — but compulsory redundancies still needed to be made.

Jobcentre Plus and Oldham Council are helping employees find new jobs.

Warburtons managing director Robert Higginson said: “Closing a bakery is the hardest decision a family firm like Warburtons has to make but these changes to our manufacturing and distribution operations are vital. Support for employees has been a number-one priority throughout the process.”

More than 20 staff have renew or acquired fork-lift truck licences through Oldham Training Company to boost their job prospects. Some sales staff not moving to the Bolton bakery have taken driving courses.

The bread-making giant employs around 5,000 staff at 14 different bakeries and 15 depots across the country.

Sad day for Shaw and these employees. I shall have to think twice now before picking up my usual warbies toasty. Please dont demolish the site and build more flats!!!!!

I hate Warburtons bread, and don't pollute my body with it! (look up the Chorleywood process to see how its made) Perhaps some of these people might be persuaded to open craftsmen bakeries where people can taste the delights of real bread, and benefit from its healthy properties. Once you've tasted the real thing, you never ever want to taste the horrid processed stuff again!

All the pontificating by the now barely heard of Ms Abrahams came to nothing.
Hope most can be re-located & if not get decent redundancy packages.

Is it not the case that the majority of staff have been given the chance to find work at the depot in Bolton? Yes, it's a drive I know, but better to have a half-hour drive or so, than nothing. ProDriver is right, there now seems to a very quiet front coming from Abrahams in a lot of matters. Our MPs are settling in well now the civil servants have got their teeth into them! Yes Minister! indeed!

It made me sad when heard the news, then it made me mad when i realised that thay had just made redundant and a week later announced the closure ! i lost out on a 25yrs redundancy payment.
Not Sad, MAD.

Oh what bliss now that warbies has shut. No HGV's at 06:00 hrs, no Skips being emptied at 06:30 hrs. Will now in summer be able to have the windows open at night. Should have happened years ago.

PUTTING THE RECORDS STRAIGHT:
1)Everyone who got made redundant from the Shaw Bakery could argue they lost out, under the 20yr legal capping.
2)Most people were not offered a job at the "Depot at Bolton", There were limited vacancies across the Production Plants, and drivers moved their routes across. Many employees sought work elsewhere.
3)For those who are glad to see the closure because of the welcome quiet, perhaps moving so close to the area of noise was a late consideration on you own part!
