NOTORIOUS . . . the Milnrow Road crossing where Annalise Holt was killed

Campaigners have won their fight for better safety measures at the notorious zebra crossing that claimed the life of12-year-old Annalise Holt before Christmas.

The danger crossing will get a “significant upgrade” in plans to increase safety throughout the borough, Oldham Council has confirmed.

Annalise died after being hit by a van on the hazardous Milnrow Road zebra in Shaw, sparking a public outcry.

Now the council has committed to changes which could include traffic lights and speed-calming measures. Councillor Dave Hibbert, Cabinet member for environment and housing, confirmed the council will do whatever it can to ease safety concerns.

He said: “It’s only right we undertake a thorough review of the crossing in Shaw following the tragic death of Annalise. We’re aware of the petitions and we’ve also spoken with ward members who made it clear they wanted a full review of the layout and signage.

“We have listened and are committed to acting on those concerns. Once a final design is prepared it will be shared with the public.”

A review of crossing sites with similar pedestrian and traffic levels is also underway across the borough, due for completion in March.
