Shaw and Crompton will mark 150 years of local government at a special event on Monday.

The District Executive will meet in Crompton Library from 5pm for a short talk by local historian Frances Stott about how the local board, urban district and parish councils were founded.

Members of the parish council and local community will also be able to enjoy a photo exhibition showing Shaw and Crompton down the years.

Before the celebration parish councillors will visit the Blue Bell Pub, Market Street, where the first meeting of the local board took place in 1864. The pub has had a blue plaque since 1964, when it was hung to mark the Shaw centenary.

Councillor John Dillon, chairman of the District Executive, said: “Local Government has brought a lot of good to Shaw and Crompton in the 150 years it has existed. It’s right that we mark this date.”

A free commemorative booklet, “History of Local Government in Shaw and Crompton”, will be available from Monday. Get a copy online at www.oldham.gov.uk/from_crompton_to_shaw.
