WORK to improve the safety of a Shaw crossing where 12-year-old Annalise Holt was killed will start on Monday.
Following public consultation, the council’s preferred option of a signalised junction controlling vehicle and pedestrian movement was chosen by the 163 people who responded.
The system uses sensors to detect the presence of pedestrians waiting at the crossing and as they are crossing the road as well as ensuring a steady flow of traffic.
Royton and Crompton School pupil Annalise was crossing Milnrow Road with her friend Shofie Kucuk-Guzel (11) on December 17 when she was struck by a van.
Traffic lights will now be put in place at the junction of Milnrow Road and Linney Lane and pedestrian controlled crossings will also be installed on each arm of the junction.
The new system will incorporate and replace the existing zebra crossing currently on Milnrow Road and a mid-September completion date is expected.
Work will be carried out at off peak times and at weekends to keep disruption for motorists to a minimum.
Councillor Dave Hibbert, cabinet member for housing, planning and transport, said: “We have committed to improving this junction and I am pleased work is now set to start. There may be some disruption while construction is carried out but please bear with us.”
