Diving into the future

IT was an emotional night for members of Crompton Classics swimming club as they competed in their last gala before merging with Royton.

Oldham Council’s decision to close Shaw Baths has forced the club to join forces with Royton to form the Oldham, Royton and Crompton Waterpolo Club.

The gala was the fourth and final fixture for both clubs in the Central Lancs Intermediate League - and Crompton Classics needed to beat Royton and achieve 187 points to beat Wigan - which they did in the final relay races.

Team manager Karen Burston said: “We’re very positive about the merger. We had some hitches but everybody always wanted it to go ahead. Looking at the results from the gala we are going to have a great team which is going from strength to strength.

“All the galas have finished now so this is our last competition as Crompton Classics. We will officially join up with Royton after Christmas when the galas start up again.

“We are all looking forward to it and I hope to maintain a key role in the team next year.”
