LOCAL Christmas spirit spread over the weekend as villages and districts switched on their annual festive lights.

Families enjoyed the big moment when the switch was flipped and their town illuminated by glittering lights.

Shaw, Greenfield and Chadderton held their events on Friday while Saturday saw Lees and Delph start their Christmas festivities, followed by Grotton yesterday.

In Shaw, Disney’s “Frozen” stars Elsa, Anna and Olaf were on hand for the big event, much to the delight of several hundred fans who couldn’t wait to see their favourites on stage.

At the same time, Chadderton Town Hall was lit up by 100-year-old Chadderton resident Ann Lord - but the traditional lantern parade had to be cancelled due to a lack of marshals.

Greenfield and Grasscroft Residents’ Association also held their Christmas tree event on Friday evening, with local primary school choirs and Boarshurst Brass Band providing the entertainment.

Saturday saw Lees glow with Christmas lights as the High Street illuminations were lit while, just an hour later, Delph joined the festive atmosphere as hundreds turned out for the annual event outside The Swan Pub.

During the final event of the weekend, Grotton switched on their festive light display last night.

Events will take place in the coming days and weekends in Hollinwood (Thursday) Springhead (Friday), Butler Green (Friday), Dobcross (Saturday), Uppermill (Saturday), Lydgate (Thursday, December 11), and Failsworth (Friday, December 12).
