ONE of Oldham’s finest has been recognised in the New Year Honours List with an MBE.

Steve Hill, deputy head teacher at St Joseph’s Primary School in Shaw is well-known in the Oldham area for his special charity exploits. His award is for services to education and charity.

“At first I couldn’t believe what I was reading and it took about a week to fully sink in,” he said.

“I’m totally overwhelmed and really surprised. It is a massive honour not only for me but for the great team of staff, children and parents we have within our community at St Joseph’s.

Steve started “Mr Hill’s Challenges” seven years ago and they have seen him take on some of the world’s most gruelling physical tasks in aid of different charities, including climbs of Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Elbrus in Russia, Mount Blanc and most recently a Mount Everest marathon.

“I stopped playing rugby and was always pushing the kids to do their best, so I decided I should practice what I preach. I started to complete the challenges for charity and get the kids involved with each year’s trip.

“They help to choose what charity I am going to donate my sponsorship and over the last seven years we’ve raised more than £50,000.”

Steve is also an enthusiastic leader of sports at his school and won the North-West Primary School Teacher of the Year award in 2006. he has since become a teaching award judge and an ambassador for teaching.
