Firebugs’ wrecking spree

Vandals went on a late night arson spree around Shaw on Friday, destroying a caravan, sheds and a van within an hour.

Firefighters from Oldham and Chadderton were called to three incidents in High Crompton between 1am and 2am.

Crews first attended Glenavon Drive at 1.17am where a caravan had been set on fire. A second call to Surrey Avenue found a Mercedes Sprinter van on fire - with flame so intense it melted the rear of a nearby Mazda. The third incident, five minutes later, saw sheds in neighbouring Dorset Avenue set alight.

Fire crews put out all the blazes quickly but the caravan, van and sheds were destroyed. Firefighters believe the same people were responsible for all the fires.

A police spokesperson confirmed that the fires are under investigation.



FIRE crews were called to two more suspected arson attacks in Oldham on Saturday.

The first was at Kent Street, Hathershaw, where a garage had been destroyed. Crews were then called to a car fire in Wimpole Street, Oldham Edge. The fires are under investigation but not thught to be connected
