Josh gets long-distance support

When family and friends heard of the brain tumour plight of former Oldhamer Josh Dunford they decided they had to help.

The 16 year old and his family, who moved from Hathershaw to Brisbane, Australia five years ago, were told the tumour was growing back following an 11-hour operation in 2013. Worse still, doctors admitted further surgery would be too risky.

But the family heard about proton beam therapy — radiation treatment that does far less damage to healthy tissue around the tumour— they wanted to help pay for it.

Only available in a handful of countries and costing £60,000, mum Eileen and dad Carl launched the Redland Community Cancer Support Group — named after their new home town. And the Oldham contingent of friends and family has joined the cause.

Led by close family friend Patricia Stajniak, plus aunts, uncles and cousins, they have organised a fund-raiser tonight at Manor Park Rugby Club, Bardsley, to show their support.

Joshua, a former pupil of East Crompton St George’s Primary School in Shaw, recently travelled to South Korea to have the treatment, which appears to have been successful. He is now recovering at home.

a“I grew up with his gran, she’s like a sister to me, and I remember Josh being born so we’re very close to the family,” said Patricia. “I thought why don’t us lot over here do something to show how much we care, so this charity night is the first thing we’ve done.”

Tonight’s event starts at 7pm.
