A FORMER prison officer received an MBE from the Queen for services to the prison service.

Brian Lord (58), from Shaw, went down to Buckingham Palace to receive the award, along with his wife Bev who is also a prison officer.

Now retired, Brian worked at Strangeways in Manchester for 31 years. He also served in the Royal Navy for seven years, during the “Cod Wars” between the UK and Iceland.

Mr Lord was also a branch secretary for the Prison Officers Association for 12 years.

He said: “I’m very privileged. It has been an interesting life.”

Bev added: “We’re all really proud of him. It’s nice that somebody doing a job like this is recognised. The whole family has been thrilled.”
