PEDAL power proved popular when keen cyclists saddled up for the Cycle Trek Oldham on Sunday.

Cross sections of the community donned their helmets and took to the streets for the ten-mile bike ride that was established last year.

The cyclists set off from Rochdale Road, Oldham, all the way into Royton and Shaw and ended at Alexandra Park in Oldham.

A medal presentation was held at which each of the 30 or so participants were congratulated for their efforts.

The aim was also to raise some money for Action Oldham Fund as well as Dr Kershaw's Hospice.

Muzahid Khan, one of the organisers of the event, said: "It has been really fun.

"It was reflective of Oldham - there were children of all ages, both genders and different ethnicities. Just people coming together.

"We want to make this an annual event.

"It's not a race, it was a slow-paced and gentle event with a strong social element to it."

Nicola Hampson (58), from Oldham, who took part in the trek, said: "I made different friends. I did it last year too. There was a nice atmosphere, very enjoyable.

"I'm a bus driver and I need to do something because I'm sat down all day."

Retired teacher Gillian Barker (57), from Shaw, added: "I ride a lot.

"There were people of all abilities on the ride. There was a really pleasant atmosphere. Everybody was supporting everybody."
