A HOSPICE which cares for residents with life-limiting illnesses is celebrating a "good" rating across the board.

Dr Kershaw's Hospice provides care for people through its inpatient unit, day care unit and hospice at home service.

Care, effectiveness, responsiveness, quality of leadership and safety were all rated as "good" by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The government health watchdog, which undertook an announced inspection at the hospice, said in its report: "Our observations of staff's interactions with people using the service demonstrated that they knew people well and treated them with respect and kindness and maintained the person's dignity at all times.

Familiar

"One in-patient told us, 'On the first night I wanted to go home, I thought hospices were just places where people went to die but this changed as I became familiar with what the hospice had to offer. You can do what you want - you can stay in bed all day if you want to'."

People felt safe and had no concerns about their safety or wellbeing.

Care plans and associated documentation were person centred."

Staff had received training and support from management to "deliver a high quality of care", according to inspectors.

The CQC were unable to speak to residents using the day hospice due to them receiving personal treatment but they praised the positive interactions they saw between the staff.

They said: "It was evident that they knew the needs and personalities of each person being supported."

Dr Kershaw's day hospice provides residents with a variety of activities to promote wellbeing, safety and independence.

They also operate a 24-hour advice line to provide support to residents and their family members at all times of the day and night.
