Terracotta ‘army’ to restore Tower

BLACKPOOL TOWER: running repairs
ROYTON conservation specialists Maysand have been called in to help restore Blackpool Tower to its former glory.
The tower - a Grade 1 listed building that has dominated the Blackpool landscape since 1894 - has undergone a major refurbishment programme since being bought by Blackpool Council in 2010.
Maysand has been awarded the contract to repair and replace damaged terracotta in the famous arches of the front facade of the Tower buildings.
Maysand managing director Bryn Lisle said: “There is a colonnade effect and a series of famous arches on that part of the building. The terracotta in the arches needs replacing. It is a truly iconic structure and we are delighted to have been asked to play a part in bringing it back to its best.”
Maysand staff will replace the damaged sections of terracotta, which will be mapped and recreated by a specialist terracotta company.
The new pieces will be installed in the first three months of 2014 in time for the Tower’s 120th birthday celebrations in May.
