Single light leaves elderly in the dark

A SINGLE lamp post lights the path in Royley Way

ELDERLY residents in Royton are in the dark - because a replacement programme has left them with only ONE lamp post for the entire street.

Residents in sheltered accommodation in Royley Way have complained after E.ON removed all but one of the street lights, leaving them concerned for their safety.

Grandfather Edward Robinson (74) said: “We used to have plenty of lights on the walkway but during the scheme to update all the lamp posts, E.ON removed the original posts and left us with just one.

“E.ON say they have provided adequate lighting - but we counted and it is 159ft (48.4m) between the lamp posts. That’s just not good enough.”

He went on: “Many residents are in their 80s and feel scared walking outside in the dark. I think it is awful the way we have been treated throughout the issue.”

An E.ON spokesperson said new lights provide greater efficiency, and the two previous columns could be replaced by just one while still complying with British and European standards.”
