‘L’ of a car to learn in

Date published: 22 July 2014

MOST parents would be terrified by the thought of their 17-year-old daughter learning to drive in their cherished classic car.

But fanatical car collectors David Dodd and Wendy Fotheringham, of Royton, think that diving straight behind the wheel of the family Wolseley 1300 will make their daughter, Dana Dodd, a better driver.

Dana said: “I’ve always been interested in classic cars. They’re so different and quirky.

“It’s really good to drive and I think if I can drive a classic car then I shouldn’t have any problems with a modern car.

“I was frustrated at first but I went out recently and suddenly everything just clicked and I feel like I’m making good progress now.”

The family own a number of classic cars including an Austin A55 and a 1969 Triumph Herald — as well as a very quirky Sinclair C5 — and they bought the 1969 Wolseley for Dana to learn in until she has finished restoring a 1961 Mini with dad.

Mum Wendy is sure her daughter will benefit from driving the car which has none of the mod-cons of today’s vehicles.
