THE world is Tom Upton’s oyster after the studious Crompton House pupil swept the board with four A*s.

Tom has been accepted at Manchester University to study mechanical engineering after he got A*s in maths, further maths, physics and chemistry.

However, Tom, son of senior deputy head Jim Upton, is now considering taking a year off his studies after the success of his results.

He said: “I wasn’t planning on it but I’ve got the option to now — I hadn’t expected to get these results.”

Overall, the school achieved a 98 per cent pass rate for all A-levels and a 100 per cent pass rate for all level three vocational qualifications.

Naomi Southwell is off to Oxford to study history after she attained A*s in history and biology and As in English literature and art. She said: “I just applied to see how I would get on and had two interviews for English and history and got into history.

“I’m really happy with my results. I didn’t think I’d do this well at all. I was a little bit scared opening them up but I’m so happy that they were what I wanted.”

Michael Aspin got four As — in politics, French, general studies and maths as well as an A* in history and is going to Durham to study politics, philosophy and economics.

He said: “I got the grades to get me into Oxford but I’ve chosen to go to Durham. I’m really looking forward to getting started.”

A record 23 pupils achieved grade As or better with almost half the grades at B or above. In total, 25 of the 29 subjects studied achieved 100 per cent pass rate.

School head Karl Newell said: “These are great results.

“Our students have worked really hard and the excellent commitment of the pupils, staff and parents has been reflected in the grades.

“I’m particularly pleased that Naomi has secured a place at Oxford. She is a fantastic pupil and she has put a lot of effort into her work.

“Tom has been a stalwart of the school, singing in the school choir and playing viola in the school orchestra. He has worked very hard to achieve his grades.

“Michael Aspin has been deputy head boy of the school and is an excellent public speaker. After studying at Durham he intends to go into politics, and I am sure he will be successful.”
