Local cricket legend Trevor’s final stand

Royton cricket veteran Trevor Lewis died following years of exposure to asbestos, an inquest heard yesterday.

Mr Lewis (62) had suffered from asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma and died in May — hours before a charity cricket game in his honour.

After being diagnosed with cancer in August 2012, Mr Lewis underwent a procedure in March 2014, to insert a temporary pulmonary “stent” - a device to help keep open blood vessels being pressed by the tumour.

But the device shifted in his chest and moved into his heart, causing significant pain

Assistant coroner Lisa Hashmi noted that this rare complication was a contributory factor in Mr Lewis’s death.

The charity event held in Trevor’s memory raised £6,000, which was split between the Greater Manchester Asbestos Victim’s Support Group and Mesothelioma UK.
