Future bright for crumbling school

NOT fit for purpose: Royton and Crompton School could be rebuilt if a council funding bid is successful

CRUMBLING Royton and Crompton School could be completely rebuilt on its current site if a funding bid is successful.

The council has applied for money to replace the Blackshaw Lane school.

The money would come from the Priority School Building Programme - which is funding the new Saddleworth School.

Oldham Council has also asked for money to rebuild Clarksfield Primary School and expand Greenfield Primary.

Royton and Crompton, along with Saddleworth, was one of the schools that missed out when the government’s £55 billion Building Schools for the Future programme collapsed in 2010.

Council leader Jim McMahon said he believes Royton and Crompton is in an even worse state than Saddleworth as it needs £2 million of emergency maintenance work just to fix the roof and electrics.

The council is waiting to hear from the Department for Education about a bid submitted last year for the school. It’s clear the facilities at the school are simply not fit for purpose.”
