Good Samaritans give drivers green light

Fed-up motorists stuck in a huge traffic jam yesterday were helped by an unexpected good Samaritan - a nearby car-wash owner.

Temporary traffic lights on Higginshaw Lane, Royton for a water leak repair broke during yesterday’s ruh-hour, leaving dozens of cars stuck in long queues.

But Blue Dolphin car wash owner Azad Ahmed decided to help - and walked into the road to direct traffic.

“People were just waiting and waiting thinking the light would change, but it didn’t,’ said Azad.

“The traffic was absolute chaos; cars were nearly driving into each other and the queues were huge.

“I thought it just wasn’t good enough – so I walked into the road and signalled one side to wait and the other to come through.

“People were very angry because they needed to get to work, and I really wanted to help them out.”

After an hour, Azad got one of his workers to carry on - and the business took responsibility for traffic flow for three hours, until workers came to replace the broken lights.

“Some people thought I worked for the traffic-light company or the council and weren’t very nice!”
