Oldham MP Jim McMahon
OLDHAM MP Jim McMahon was unable to speak at a debate on the Northern Powerhouse last night after the train taking him to the event in Manchester hit and killed someone.
Mr McMahon, MP for Oldham West and Royton, was due to speak at a Discuss Manchester event where he was expected to criticise Greater Manchester’s devolution deal as a poorhouse rather than a powerhouse.
The train carrying him to the debate fatally struck someone.
Mr McMahon said: “Train I was travelling in has fatally struck a person at Macclesfield. Very distressing for the family involved. Macclesfield station is now closing and will mean I will not make the Discuss Manchester debate on devolution.”
