A MAJOR water pipe burst in Chadderton left residents without water and electricity yesterday.

The burst main in Hollinwood Avenue affected around 30 homes and businesses flooding the roads and nearby gardens.

United Utilities engineers arrived at the site at around noon and worked to fix the pipe into the afternoon.

Resident Muriel Goodall, whose garden was flooded, said: "Water was coming all the way down my drive.

"One or two gardens have been affected by it.

"But I think I had the worst because the burst was right outside my house.

"We have also had no electricity near enough all day. I cannot cook anything and cannot use the heating but we hope that it is going to be back on soon.

"It has made a bit of a mess of my drive but they are going to send in someone. They are going to have to repair the pavement where they have had to dig it up.

"It will all have to be concreted over.

"They have done their best but it is a big job.

"It is a bit of a nuisance having no electricity and no water.

"They had to turn off the water while they were doing the repair."

Water was flowing down Hollinwood Avenue towards Morrisons and into the grounds of the 73-bedroom Victoria Hotel.

Vehicles continued to use the road throughout the day, with large amounts of water spraying from beneath vans and cars.

Morrisons duty manager Donna Porter said: "Luckily the burst doesn't seem to have affected us."

A United Utilities spokesman said that the burst was repaired by tea-time and apologised to those affected.
