SHOCKING footage of a car driving through a red light and narrowly missing a teenager using the pelican crossing outside a Chadderton school has caused outrage on social media.

The video, taken from another vehicle's dash cam, shows the black BMW fail to stop at the crossing outside Newman College, Broadway, driving through the red light and coming within seconds of hitting a young pupil as she crosses the road.

The footage, which was recorded at 8.45am on Tuesday, also shows a school crossing guard step in the road just moments after the young girl, followed by several other Newman College pupils.

The driver who captured the near miss said: "It was horrifying to see.

"The car wasn't speeding but the driver made no attempt to stop at the red light.

"They were only a second away from hitting the girl when they went through .

"One second and it could have been very different."

He added that he posted the video online so other people could see the footage and think about their driving.

"People can be rushing to work or not paying close attention to the road but a lapse in concentration could be fatal, particularly when you're driving close to a school," he said.

"Luckily the girl and the other students crossing didn't seem to be shaken by what had just happened.

"If it was my child who had come so close to being hit, I'd want the police to act and speak to the driver about their actions."
