WARM-HEARTED firefighters came to the rescue of a barn owl after she was found entangled in a tree in Royton.

The bird, called Mazi, had been stranded in the tree overnight when she was discovered in Charles Street.

Crews came to the aid of RSPCA officers at about 11.20am on Friday to help them gain access.

Watch manager Pete Marshall of Chadderton Community Fire Station said: "We used a ladder to reach the part of the tree where the owl was entangled before sawing away the branches to release her."

Mazi has been reunited with her grateful owner.

Firefighter Dave Brearley of Chadderton Red Watch who assisted with the rescue said: "The owner was really happy to have her back.

"He had been there for a good few hours trying to get her down."
